ITURMENDI AND SURROUNDINGS

Iturmendi is one of the most charateristic villages of Barranca-Burunda (Sakana) of Navarra .It mantains the shape of broad streets and many squares. It has great houses with coats and lend forwards.

In the highest part of the village we can find the eighteenth century parish church with its tower and inside its paintings and a baroque-rococo alter piece. There is also one of the best Romanesque baptismal fonts of Navarre, from the chapel of Aitzaga.

It's a pleasure to walk its streets and squares admiring the balconies, shields and floring decoration where neighbours make every elfort to decorate the facades.

One of the proposed tours is a tour of the village, explaining the history of their homes and offices related to them, as well as other cultural and artistic aspects.

One interesting aspect is the location of Iturmendi:

It is 45km away from Pamplona-Iruña and also 45 km from Vitoria-Gasteiz. It`s 35 km away from Estella-Lizarra and there are 80km from Iturmendi to San Sebastian-Donostia.

We are surrounded by big mountains like Urbasa in the south, Aralar in the north, the big rock San Donato-Beriain in the east and the mountain Aratz and Aitzkorri in the west.

Iturmendi keeps many traditions and festivals:

The year begin with the tradition of Urteberri, young people go from house singing a few verses in euskera, referring to the New years.

At Christmas we celebrate the Olentzero and the Three Kings Parade. The carnival is as well a tradition we celebrate.

One of the most interesting celebration is the May-Maiatza. This celebration consist in pushing a tree of 20 m in the middle of main square on the first of May. All the village participate and with the help of "Los Quintos" we remember this tradition related to the renewal of nature, fertility or simply the tradition of taking the cattle to the mountains Urbasa.

The holidays are the 16th of July . The 18th of July there is a pilgrimage to the shrine of Santa Marina.

On the 15th of August we have a celebration at the Romanesque chapel of Aitzaga, which is located at about 500 metres from the village. We can find nearly two other chapels "Pilara" and "San Pedro".

In Iturmendi you can do different activities:

The first ones are sport related and can be done in the fronton that is in the middle of the town. Besides these, there are numerous activities related to nature since around the town you can find large oak and beech tree forests: trips (walking or bicycling), berries and mushrooms recollection, cultural walks on horseshoe driveways, visits to singular trees, etc…

Also, Santa Marina hermitage´s surroundings are used by gliding enthusiasts to practice paragliding and hang-gliding.

Iturmendi still keeps the flour mill with its unique façade. The Burunda river flows through its fields and is retained in 2 dams: the Bakaiku mill´s one, built in a slide shape, has been used as a river pool and you can also go fishing or canoeing on it.
